    01 Overcome

    Alternative content

    :: Production Notes ::

    Description: I wrote this way back in '03 for either my husband, best friend or both. I don't specifically remember who it was written for, but it was written for someone needing encouragement. Fast forward eight years and my best friend drops the disk on my desk saying, "it needs to go on the album." Upon listening, I noted that the production was horrible and the tune itself was a bit ethereal, however the lyrics were profoundly relevant. The band wasn't exactly enthusiastic about tackling it, until the drummer, Chris Donaldson, took a stab at it. From there forward, it came together seamlessly and it was clear to us all that "Overcome" would lead off the album.

    Inspiration: Overcome has become my personal anthem. It psychs me up to do what's necessary to get through tough situations, whether that be elbow grease, sheer will power, prayer or a combination thereof.

    :: lyrics ::

    I refuse to commiserate my current situation
    Though at times the struggle wears me down
    I believe in the power of my prayer and meditation
    There my source of strength is always found

    And now I must
    FIGHT
    To live my dreams
    FIGHT
    To share my love
    FIGHT
    To understand that I have the power to overcome

    FIGHT
    To live my dreams
    FIGHT
    To share my love
    FIGHT
    To understand that I have the power to overcome

    Overcome
    Overcome
    Overcome
    Overcome

    Description: This, too, is another tune that has been with me for a while. The thought is that once you get yourself psyched up to do something, the next step is to act, hence, Leap of Faith.

    Inspiration: I understood how short life is after my mother's death. I'm not getting any younger and my dreams will never be realized unless I pursuit them.

    :: lyrics ::

    Ooh
    I stand here | dreams in hand | tired of waiting | and I need a chance | oo o oooh I need a chance
    Talking to God (God) | And now I understand, yeah | Oo o ooh, I understand
    (The Voice of Non-Reason) Stop thinkin bout it | All I need to do is take a deep breath | And then leap

    Chorus
    Leap (leap) of faith | Leap (leap) of faith | Leap (leap) of faith | Leap (leap) of faith

    No more missed | opportunities | Got a life of purpose | in front of me | Oo o ooh, in front of me | My doubts must flee
    Focused and clear (clear) | Deadlocked on all my dreams, yeah | Oo o ooh, all my dreams
    (delay) I know I'll succeed if I release my fears | And just leap

    Chorus
    Leap (leap) of faith | Leap (leap) of faith | Leap (leap) of faith | Leap (leap) of faith

    Adlibs
    Leap of faith | Leap of faith | Leap of faith | Go ahead and take a leap of faith
    to live my best days | and love those in my life | Nothing gained without sacrifice | just leap...with faith....
    trust that everything will be ok

    Outro:
    Ain't nothing to it but to move | Push my fears aside, yeah | Said I'm leaping, leaping
    Can't let nothing slow my groove | No delay in my stride, yeah | Said I'm leaping, leaping

    :: lyrics ::

    Verse:
    It ain't easy when you wanna let go | But I know me and I want it simple | I wanna move on with my life | Manifest what's in my mind
    What is old can hold you down | It gets you stuck in ruts and then you drown | In mediocrity | Say "yes" if you agree, that

    Pre-chorus
    People, places, wants and things | Can compromise our self esteem | And keep us from our dreams
    We all know what's in our soul | Aspirations, hopes and goals | But we must take control
    Don't rationalize | Listen to your inner guide | If you know, if you know that it's no good then let it goooooo

    Verse:
    Now there's a challenge when you alter your tune | And yet, I'm striving for more positive moods | I'm moving fury from my space | And pouring love into its place.
    What isn't for me, halts my flow | It clouds my vision and chokes out my growth | And I want more from my life | than burdens, issues, grief and strife.

    Pre-chorus
    People, places, wants and things | Can compromise our self esteem | And keep us from our dreams
    We all know what's in our soul | Aspirations, hopes and goals | But we must take control
    Don't rationalize | Listen to your inner guide | If you know, if you know that it's no good then let it goooooo

    Bridge:
    Let it go | Let it go | No more tossed to and fro | I've got to let it go.

    01 Sun! Shine!

    Alternative content

    :: Production Notes ::

    Description: An ode to the sun

    Inspiration: Bubs Fiddler asked me to write to the track. I really loved it and wanted to say something meaningful. It took months to find the proper inspiration. Then, on a sunny day, late in the winter season, after a string of a drab days, I penned the song. Simply, sunshine makes me feel good. I feel most alive and connected to nature when it shines brightly.

    Musicians:
    Lead Voice: Inohs Sivad
    Bass: Thomas "Bubs" Fiddler

    :: Lyrics ::
    There is but one sound reason | Why I feel so damned good right now | Cool seasons are leaving | The air is warm and the sun is bright
    Never a sight more pleasing | Than the big orange eye in the sky | Your heat brings good feelings | And I feel my spirits climb

    Chorus
    You fill my heart | With passion that burns | You are the spark that gives life | You are the reason all things grow | Sun! Shine! | I love you

    There at the dawn of all things | Commanded to light the way for all | We evolve as we revolve | Around and round your firey ball
    Under your might we survive | Under your light nature rises | No surprises | Day-in, day-out | I know that you will rise and shine

    Description: Flirty and fun

    Inspiration: Hell, we all need to get some... Damon Warmack brought this song to me. He had written it years ago and couldn't develop it beyond the music and the hook. "I can show you things that you've never known. I can love you to the deepest core of your soul." I loved it the moment he played and sang it for me. It's one of my favs on this project.

    What's your fantasy? | I can show you beauty beyond all your senses | Give you ecstasy | That your soul's been longing for
    Don't you wanna go with me? | To a place where the beautiful reside | Don't be shy | Just follow my flow

    Chorus
    I can show you things that you've never known | I can love you to the deepest core of your soul
    I can show you things that you've never known | I can love you to the deepest core of the soul

    Post-Chorus
    Show you things you've never known | Love you to the core of your soul | Show you things you've never known | Love you to the core

    Verse
    From your head to your toes | Every kiss will be filled with a passion | For you and you alone (I just wanna please you)
    What cha wanna do? | I'll oblige all you're thinking of | No more talking, baby let's love

    You're such a wonderful man | You work so hard to fulfill all my needs | So please, allow me, a kiss, or two, or three

    03 Brown-Eyed Susan

    Alternative content

    :: Production Notes ::

    Description: Self-affirming
    Inspiration: I wrote these lyrics years ago while seriously struggling with self-love. My desire was to write about my struggle metaphorically and at that time, I had grown passionate about flowers and gardening.
    I have always viewed myself as the underdog surrounded by those I deemed better than myself. In this song the roses symbolically represents what is societally deemed beautiful. The brown eyed susan represents me – wild, vibrant.

    :: Lyrics ::

    I was born in a garden of roses | For so long | I thought my yellow petals were wrong
    As I grew into the soil I was planted | I never new the value of my own bloom

    Chorus
    Brown Eyed Susan with roses | What will she be | Passion burning for tomorrow | Full of possibility

    Though I'm sad, the roses sing my praises | They say I add, a splash of difference that they never had
    Now I know beauty has many colors | And I love my own my rich umber tone

    Chorus
    Brown Eyed Susan with roses | What will she be | Passion burning for tomorrow | Full of possibility

    Bridge (Modulation)
    Seasons | They Change | Sun Shines | Wind Blows | Earth Dries | I Wilt | Rain Falls I Grow

    Chorus
    Brown Eyed Susan with roses | What will she be | Passion burning for tomorrow | Full of possibility

    Description: An ode to love and the changes you go through to discover it

    Inspiration: Changes is the song that inspired the album. I wrote the music during a month-long visit to New York City. I titled the song and decided upon it's subject matter, but had difficulty writing it. When I returned home, I solicited the song writing prowess of Naomi Daniel and La Shaun phoenix Moore. After an evening of dialog, laughter and two bottles of wine, we had written the song and recorded scratch vocals. The song is essentially about how love changes everything. Here's a breakdown of the first verse and chorus: Years pass, 3, then 6 and then 10. ~We (the writers) have had our own experiences with love. The first line defines the length of time between our love interests, mine being 10 years. You laugh. It might not happen again. You live not knowing what life has in store. ~Describes the cynical attitude we embraced during those relationship-less years – doubting love would ever come to us again. But then someone walks through the door. ~The love interest enters and sparks the change of heart. Changes, put a healing on my heart | (Then you find you can love) | Wiped the pain away You believe again | (When you find you can love) ~Love totally inspires. When we are loved, we find that we can love ourselves and others.

    :: lyrics ::

    Years pass | Three, then six, then ten | You laugh | It might not happen again
    You live | Not knowing what life has in store | and then someone walks through the door

    Pre chorus
    Told Heaven you were through with love | Confessed that you’ve been hurt too much
    Life ushers in the winds of change | It heals your heart | Then you find you can love

    Chorus
    Changes | Put a healing on your heart | Wiped the pain away | You believe again

    Verse
    So you open up your heart to love | And you find that you just can’t give enough
    You push away your fear | Release yourself to the beauty that love holds

    Pre chorus
    The years of hurt just fade away | Forget you ever felt the pain | And your spirit whispers knowingly
    Look at how free you can be | If you only just believe

    Vamp
    I believe it | I believe in love | I believe it | Watch the changes

    Description: A prayer for my husband and marriage

    Inspiration: I wrote this years ago during that barren love interest-less time I mentioned in the Changes synopsis. At the time, I was a devout Christian and I had participated in a single women's dating retreat. We were encouraged to pray specifically for the characteristics that we wanted in our mates. Not only were we to pray specifically, but we were also encouraged to write it down so that we would have proof that God had answered our prayer. I still have that tattered piece of paper…

    I also have the man I prayed for…

    Inspiration: I have grown completely frustrated by the crab-in-the-barrel mentality embraced by many Detroiters. It permeates every community in the city – especially the music scene. This song speaks to that issue.

    :: lyrics ::

    On all I love I’m breaking free today. | Won’t be stopped by crab mentalities. | Too much world that I’m supposed to see | Can’t let your hatred get the best of me.

    Pre-chorus
    Life’s too short | For me to break your stride. | Instead of stepping on me | Come for the ride.

    Chorus
    Moving in confidence | A steady pace | Won’t hustle out my people | As I elevate… | Join me in the great escape | Come on | We’re getting out the barrel tonight! | Well Alright!
    My dreams soar much farther than the sky | They won’t be bruised or beaten left to die | I’ve got your back | If you’ve got mine! | No need for fear | Cuz love is on our side.

    Pre-chorus
    Life’s too short | For me to break your flow | Instead of griping `bout me | Come on go.

    Chorus

    Vamp:
    Everybody say, “Out the barrel!” | (Out the barrel)
    Say, Out the barrel | (Out the barrel)
    (repeat)

    Description: A call to live life to the fullest

    Inspiration: A few years ago, my mother became very ill. She has since passed on, but the experience of nursing a sick loved one is a sobering, yet, enlightening point in my life.
    I understand that I had better become passionate about my dreams and ferociously pursue them. We are frail beings. We don't have as much time as we think. And I refuse to waste a single day wallowing in insecurity, fear or remorse.

    :: lyrics ::

    365 days within the year | 8760 hours to fill | Sometimes I plan it out | Sometimes I let it come as I go | With hopes I've done something to bring meaning to my flow

    pre chorus
    But clock is ticking (ticking) | The minutes slip in (slip in) | To hours days and weeks and months and years | And the time is racing (racing racing) | Got no time for wasting (wasting wasting) | Got too much to do to be paralyzed by fear

    chorus
    It's time for me to figure out just how I'll fill my days | If I live the life I'm dreaming of I'll grow in so many ways | I'll release the negativity holding me down in one place | And embrace my new found liberty by the end of this phrase
    post chorus

    Fill my days x 4

    And now I consciously live each day just as I dreamed | Knowing my happiness depends on me
    I'm feeling energized | Got a new state of mind, I'm at ease | Now that I recognize | Through the good or bad times | To keep my peace

    Description: Self-affirming

    Inspiration: I was running out of time. I had given myself a deadline for completing this album and time was short. Damon Warmack, laid down the foundation of track and I arranged it, but again, had difficulty writing the lyrics. I called on the mega-talent, La Shaun phoenix Moore, to write if for me. I gave her some direction and she totally got into my head. She said everything I wished to say with this song.

    :: lyrics ::

    There's a rhythm to life | I've looked beyond it's strife | And been taken to uncharted highs | In my understanding
    If I take my time | Reaching for peace of mind | I will see with my inner eye | What is edifying
    I am secure with my individuality | I am better just being me

    Chorus
    Eyes open wide | I walk into my new life | I face the world as is | As I.S.

    I criticize | My look, my height, my size | And somedays I am paralyzed | I wanna run and hide
    I realize | My look, my height, my size | Can be summarized in one line | I am looking just fine
    I am secure with my individuality | I am better just being me

    Chorus
    Eyes open wide | I walk into my new life | I face the world as is| As I.S.

    Can love be made into a rational thought? If so, let me express my intentions. I wanna lay my head on your thickness. Pamper your submission. Is that my favorite blouse you’re wearing? It’s no longer needed.Victoria’s showing her secrets and Donna’s Karen for and I’m the visitor ready to explore its hidden fantasies. Place your wants and thoughts near. Tease me and condo extravagance. Turn the lights off and leave the heels on and it’s on from sun to sun. Tell me what’s your pleasure, I’m here to please.

    :: lyrics ::

    Working every day, 9 to 5 | Laboring long and hard just to survive | Day to day, giving my all | Living pay to paycheck | Just to keep from falling
    400 years have gone by | Since the Motha-land told us goodbye | Blood, sweat and tears
    Fed the soil and the Nation grew up

    Chorus
    Yet, I’m wondering | Where’s the Apple Pie for me? | Yes, I’m wondering | Where’s the Apple Pie for me?

    Sometimes, I wonder why | It’s so hard to feel free on this side | Of the waters | The drum is calling and in its tone | I hear the sound of home

    But here I stand, on this ground | To make my way with the faith I have found | In my ancestors, my heritage | They keep me strong
